Aug 23, Alison rated it liked it Shelves: The plot twist was seeable early on, but the result is a nice examination of politics and survival, loyalty and fealty, in a society with very different rules to those we are used to.

The original cover, which was done in a style matching the first three books in the series, can be seen on the homepage for the French editions. The first five German translations had covers which used stylizied woodcuts - some of them Medieval, some of them decidedly not. The style then shifted rapidly in three different directions for the sixth, seventh, and eighth books: The sixth always looks to me like Harry Potter facing off against a dementor.

The seventh cover makes the book look like a historical romance set in the 18th century. And the eighth has a very tasteful portrait of a nun.
This alternative cover, on the other hand, has no resemblance to any of them. It most closely resembles the early editions of the French translations. This reprint came out shortly after the German edition of The Prioress' Tale Der Priorin came out, and, to my eye, bears a close resemblance to that cover. The entire collection was then licensed and translated into Thai.
Perhaps the most mysterious thing about this collection is the cover itself: How is that even possible? Alas, we will probably never know. A locked-room mystery may have some solution, but a magical typewriter is beyond the ken of this author. You may notice the occasional difference between these flats and the final versions of the covers.

Most notable is that the original intention for The Servant's Tale was a rather remarkable orange. I count myself rather blessed that this was changed at the last minute to a far more pleasant blue.
